Herbicide May Cause Parkinson’s Disease & Other Health Issues

Paraquat, sold under the name Gramoxone and made by Syngenta and numerous other chemical companies, is a very widely used herbicide, a.k.a. weedkiller or plant killer. It is in the same classification as the much-publicized weedkiller Roundup, made by Monsanto, which is owned by Bayer. Throughout the United States, paraquat is used primarily as a liquid, in various strengths. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies paraquat as “restricted use,” meaning it can be used only by people who are licensed applicators. As paraquat is toxic and highly poisonous, the form that is marketed in the United States has a blue dye to keep it from being confused with beverages, a sharp odor to serve as a warning, and an added agent to cause vomiting if someone drinks it. Paraquat from other countries may or may not have these safeguards added.

According to Parkinson’s News Today, paraquat users have a higher risk of developing the cognitive disorder Parkinson’s disease. Studies show that workers, mainly agricultural workers, who are exposed to paraquat tend to develop Parkinson’s more frequently and at an earlier age than Parkinson’s patients who do not work with paraquat. Studies also iterate that paraquat can kill dopamine-producing neurons in mice. The loss of these neurons is a key event that drives Parkinson’s progression.

If you or a loved one have developed or been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and you have a history of paraquat exposure, you may be entitled to benefits and financial compensation.

What Is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disorder. It effects the nervous system, ultimately impacting the victim’s ability to control movement and bodily functions such as talking, sleeping, walking, maintaining balance, and other motor skills. It is a progressive disease, meaning it gets worse over time. Parkinson’s can be genetic, or it can be induced by exposure to chemicals such as paraquat. Typically, it is seen in more males than females, and most people who develop Parkinson’s are over the age of 60. However, due to long-term paraquat exposure, victims can be much younger than 60.

Benefits In Paraquat-Induced Parkinson’s Disease Lawsuits

It is possible to live with Parkinson’s and have a decent quality of life, but the younger you are when you develop, it the younger you are when it becomes debilitating. Medications and some surgical procedures can help, but it is incurable — long-term care will become necessary at some point. Benefits that can be awarded in paraquat-related Parkinson’s disease cases may include pain and suffering compensation, diminished quality of life compensation, lost wage compensation, long-term care and life planning compensation, and compensation for medical expenses and medical care. We will thoroughly analyze your claim and get you the maximum compensation and benefits you deserve.
